TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program which is an equal educational opportunity college preparatory program for low-income, first generation and high potential high school students. Upward Bound works with students on a long term and intensive basis. Some services include; academic advising, academic enrichment classes, tutoring, Student/parent workshops and advocacy. This is a non-credit position. This job is 100% fully funded through grants/sponsored projects
TRIO Upward Bound is seeking an educator to instruct a supplemental course for our afterschool, college preparation program targeting high school age students from Minneapolis. We are looking for an instructor for the following course (January - May):
Science Exploration and Study Skills for 9th grade students. This class meets every Wednesday. Instructor must be available from 3-6pm as well as additional office prep hours with the TA.
Revise and/or create curriculum in high school level Sciences and study skills course.
Prepare weekly lesson plans and teach in a classroom one day a week at the University of Minnesota, Wednesday evenings during the Minneapolis School District calendar year.
Monitor attendance, document student performance and complete student evaluations as required by TRIO Upward Bound.
Assess student learning and inform professional staff of student academic concerns and areas for improvement.
Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant.
Attend staff training and occasional staff meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Classroom teaching and management experience (1-2 years)
Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting)
Available for the duration of the Minneapolis Public School year calendar (mid-January to early May)
Knowledge in a variety of sciences
Experience teaching Science and/or Study Skills
Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL)
Experience working w/ high school aged youth (can be outside of the classroom)
Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
Experience with direct classroom instruction
Strong classroom management skills
Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
Experience working with low-income and/or first generation students
Experience in supervision teaching assistants
Strong communication skills (written and oral)
Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO Upward Bound program goals
Candidates who have overcome and/or experience similar socio-economic backgrounds to TRIO Upward Bound student population including low income and/or first generation will receive priority consideration.
