Position Summary

There are numerous challenges facing the child welfare field in Michigan and nationally. In an evolving policy environment with new practice approaches encouraged by federal legislation, the need for understanding child abuse and neglect and the response to child maltreatment is imperative. The School of Social Work has a network of strong relationships with the local and national child welfare research and practice community, and our faculty are engaged in multiple federal and state-funded child welfare initiatives and research grants. We seek candidates who will contribute to efforts to advance our child welfare research and evaluation agenda, teach courses in our Child Welfare Certificate program, and address the changing aspects of child welfare policy and practice within an engaged and supportive environment. The MSU School of Social Work is dedicated to educating students for ethical, competent, responsive, and innovative social work practice, and to conducting and disseminating high quality research that improves the well-being of the most vulnerable in society. Our teaching, research, and outreach synergistically promote social justice, positive change, and solutions to the problems facing diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. More than 650 students are enrolled in our CSWE-accredited BASW and MSW programs, and PhD program.

The School of Social Work seeks an outstanding scholar to join the faculty as a tenure system Assistant Professor. This is a full-time, academic year appointment with responsibilities in the following areas: 45% Research/Scholarship, 45% Teaching/Mentoring, and 10% Service/Outreach.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Social Work or related field

Minimum Requirements

• An earned doctorate in Social Work or a related field by the date of employment
• A commitment to conduct research that informs practice and policy impacting child welfare
• A beginning record of scholarly productivity as evidenced by peer-reviewed research publications, peer-reviewed conference presentations, and pursuit of research funding
• A well-defined research agenda poised to meaningfully contribute to the child welfare knowledge base
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to anti-racist scholarship, teaching and professional service, as well as the advancement of social justice and human rights
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team
• Commitment to engaged teaching, active learning, and student advancement

Desired Qualifications

• MSW from an accredited School of Social Work  
• A record of success in acquiring extramural research funding
• Teaching experience (including online) with undergraduate and graduate students
• Experience with data management, data analysis, and data display
• Research interest and focus on the child welfare workforce, child maltreatment prevention, and/or kinship care
• 2 years post-MSW practice experience
• Prior social work practice experience in a child welfare setting
• Prior experience working with public and private child welfare agencies
• Experience and interest in teaching advanced clinical practice
