Carnegie Mellon University's Simon Initiative seeks a K-12 Coordinator to support, promote, and develop educational technology and learning science projects, and to engage with and develop the network of regional stakeholders in the K-12 space. The Coordinator will play a critical role in developing and advancing the Initiative's K-12 strategy. This 3-year position is initially supported by a generous grant from the Grable Foundation; continued appointment and expansion of the role are possible based on the Coordinator's success in sustainability and fundraising efforts.
The Simon Initiative interconnects and accelerates CMU's exceptional learning science and educational-technology ecosystem. Central to this work is an approach called Learning Engineering: the use of learning research, data, and the affordances of technology to design and deliver innovative, instrumented educational practices. These innovations improve outcomes while simultaneously generating data to refine and advance theory, fueling a virtuous cycle of research and practice. The Initiative encompasses a broad array of faculty, researchers, technologists, expertise centers/organizations, and associated projects, expertise services, technologies, innovations, and research.
The Initiative is part of the larger Pittsburgh educational community, with K-12 stakeholders that include diverse school districts, formal and informal learning organizations, foundations, and the nationally recognized Remake Learning Network. The Simon Initiative is working to strengthen and expand its connections with this broad community.
The Simon Initiative K-12 coordinator will be responsible for developing, communicating, and executing the Initiative's K-12 learning engineering strategy. Essential elements of this work include:
- Identifying, documenting, and promoting established and emerging Simon-related K-12 projects;
- Interconnecting these projects with one another and with the larger Simon learning engineering ecosystem (projects, tools, and approach);
- Engaging with, developing expanding a diverse network of K-12 partners in the Pittsburgh educational community;
- Developing durable partnerships, relationships, and research sites across this network, with a focus on persistent approaches for both soliciting needs and challenges from within the network, and for placing projects into appropriate sites;
- Leading efforts of collaboration with members of this network regarding Simon-related K-12 projects;
- Building awareness among K-12 network partners to grow participation and partnership alliances for Simon-related K-12 projects;
- Grant writing;
- Contributing to funding and sustainability efforts.
Responsibilities include
- Tracking and documenting Simon K-12 projects, including submitting operational and progress reports
- Promoting the Simon learning engineering approach and tools across internal and external stakeholders
- Broadly promoting and disseminating Simon-related K-12 work through multiple means, including social media, conferences, talks, and professional development
- Contributing to funding and sustainability efforts, including grants-related support (identifying opportunities, maintaining grants-related resources, writing and administration)
- Developing and maintaining Simon K-12 web presence
- Documenting existing partnerships with K-12 educational and research partners
- Growing and reinforcing the network of research and practice among regional K12 educators, institutions and stakeholders
- Facilitating communication, needs identification and connections across the network
- Facilitating Simon research and development efforts in K12
- Provide professional development opportunities for regional stakeholders
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree is required, and a Master's Degree is strongly preferred
- Minimum three years of K-12 experience (administrative, support or teaching)
- Ability to actively engage with higher education faculty and K-12 stakeholders
- Experience and existing connections with the regional K-12 ecosystem
- Experience in administration of programs and supervision of personnel
- Prior experience working in higher educational institutions.
- Demonstrated capacity to inspire, motivate, and work well with others
- Ability to lead individuals and/or teams effectively
- Self-motivating, able to work independently and with limited oversight
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in diverse situations
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Excellent communications skills, including ability to present information to audiences
- Computer proficiency including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
- Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while paying close attention to detail
- Team-oriented, communicate clearly and effectively, and demonstrate the ability to work well with others in a creative and collaborative environment
- Must be able to pass pre-employment background check(s)
