The Governing Board of Cloverdale Unified School District is seeking as its next superintendent an educational leader with superior interpersonal and communication skills who will demonstrate an open, collaborative, inclusive management style.
The city of Cloverdale is located in northern Sonoma County, California, about eighty-five miles north of San Francisco, and thirty miles north of Santa Rosa. Cloverdale began as an early stagecoach stop known as Markleville on the Rancho Rincon de Musalacon Mexican grant. In 1856 R.B. Markle and W.J. Miller bought 759 acres, which included the present site of the town, from Johnson Horrell. In 1859 James Abram Kleiser bought Markle's interest, and the town was laid out. The town was incorporated when the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad arrived in 1872. By 1878, the railroad service provided three trains a day between Cloverdale and Ferries of San Francisco Bay.
Today there are approximately 9,000 people who live in Cloverdale, one of the most affordable housing areas in the San Francisco Bay Area. 50% of the community is Latinx. This diverse community is made up of working families, a large senior community, agricultural workers, and multigenerational local families. Cloverdale maintains a small town feeling while offering close access to world class outdoor activities, dining, wineries, and visual and performing arts. Cloverdale is a relaxed and enjoyable place to live, work, and play. The city is an hour from the Pacific Ocean, four hours from Lake Tahoe, and right in the middle of Wine Country.
The successful candidate will be someone experienced in elementary and/or secondary school operations and will lead the district to the next level of achievement, while embracing and supporting all that has been accomplished. The new superintendent will be highly visible and active in the school as well as visible and involved in the community, and will have the ability to foster strong, cooperative relationships with all stakeholders. The person selected for this position will be someone of the highest integrity who will continue to build a positive culture of trust, respect, and success.
The Cloverdale Unified School District serves the community of Cloverdale and the surrounding area. The school district serves about 1,300 students and is composed of one elementary school, one middle school, a comprehensive high school, and an alternative high school. The student population is approximately 60% Latino, 30% Caucasian, 3% American Indian and a few percentages of other ethnicities. About 64% of the students have been designated Socioeconomically Disadvantaged, while 33% of students entering Cloverdale schools are identified as English Learners, most of whom speak Spanish as their first language.
Teachers are continually updating their knowledge and skills to bring the best possible teaching practices to the classroom. Staff members meet every Wednesday in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) to discuss student achievement, analyze student work and develop lessons for the new Common Core State Standards. The teachers adjust their teaching strategies based on data from benchmark tests and common formative assessments developed during PLC collaboration time. The principal monitors each PLC on a rotating basis, answering questions and providing support.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are being implemented districtwide. Each classroom is outfitted with 21st century learning tools, including a variety of educational technology to support the curriculum. Every classroom includes document cameras, large interactive touchscreen displays, iPads in grades TK-K for small group center support, 1:1 iPads in grade 1, and 1:1 Chromebooks in grades 2-12. The small-town atmosphere supports a positive school culture and the norms that are the cornerstone of all behavioral expectations: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Kind.
The District Office is located adjacent to Cloverdale High School and is staffed with the superintendent, business, human resources, special education, curriculum, technology, food services, and maintenance/operations/transportation departments.
