GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The principal serves as the educational leader and general administrator of an elementary school. The elementary school principal is supervised and evaluated by the Director of Elementary Education.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Selects, assigns, supervises and evaluates building level personnel. - Facilitates the establishment of standards of expected student progress and techniques for the assessment of that progress. - Provides a necessary administrative support and supervision in order that standards of expected pupil performance be established and met. - Utilizes appropriate assessment techniques. - Establishes and maintains a school program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth that is in keeping with the needs of the community that it serves. - Administers and coordinates building level budget and effectively utilizes other school, District and community resources. - Establishes and maintains proper pupil control. Carry out provisions of school and District policy and the Education Code relating to pupil department.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Monitors attendance, guidance, counseling and student activity programs. - Conducts student/parent conferences in cases of serious disciplinary problems such as expulsion, exclusion and exemption as requested. - Participates and takes leadership role in District-level committees as assigned. - Coordinates and provides in-service growth opportunities for teaching personnel within the school. - Supervises District personnel assigned to the school (such as psychologist and nurse) and assumes responsibility for same when they are working at the school. - Establishes school/student schedules. - Inspects school plant to ensure proper maintenance, operation and safety. - Serves as liaison between staff assigned to the school and the Superintendent and/or division heads of the District Office. - Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned to maintain the instructional and operational program of the school. - Participates in the managerial support system of the District. - Ability to relate to all members of the educational community
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Five (5) years of experience in teaching, preferably at the elementary level. - Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university - Master’s Degree in Education DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - California Teaching Credential that authorize service in a departmentalized classroom. - Ed.D. or Ph.D. in teaching, and or leadership. - Strong behavior management and positive discipline skills. - Demonstrated ability to work effectively with professional personnel, community and parents. - Ability to coordinate and direct the work of instructional assistants, support personnel. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print. - Requires hearing (which may be corrected) to hear conversation in the classroom, on the phone and over the intercom system. - Requires the ability to write or type to communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff. - Other physical activities related to the operation of a classroom (including but not limited to, bending, lifting, squatting, sitting, walking).
