Mills College @ Northeastern University Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded TRiO program designed to enhance the academic skills of low-income first-generation college-bound high school students in the Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue post-secondary education. TRiO is funded by the U. S. Department of Education.
After School Tutoring
The Upward Bound Program is hiring after-school tutors. We are looking for tutors for our Richmond After School Program in humanities, science, and math. Our after-school program will take place at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, CA, during the academic year on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
OVERVIEW
During the school year, Mills College @ Northeastern University Upward Bound offers an intensive but supportive after-school program for our students. Tutors' employment begins in September 2022 and goes through May 2023. The primary responsibilities for tutors are to work with Upward Bound high school students during weekday afternoon tutorials to provide academicsupport in various high school subjects. Tutors establish and maintain effective and positive relationshipsin a diverse and multicultural environment. Tutors communicate/work effectively with high schoolstudents who bring a range of educational backgrounds as well as a variety of learning styles. Tutors will workclosely with the Associate Director and the Academic Advisors regarding students' progress and needs.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong knowledge of English, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra I & II, pre-Calculus, Calculus AB/BC, Mandarin, Spanish, and/or French.
Skills and knowledge to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Have completed at least sophomore year in college or university.
Be in good academic standing at college or university attending (3.0 and above) or have recently graduated.
Be able to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all constituencies and members of the public.
Be able to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment.
Be able to work safely in compliance with the College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
Knowledge of the Mills College @ Northeastern University Upward Bound Program's mission and vision.
Knowledge of child/adolescent cognitive development and different learning styles.
Be able to attend the academic staff training that will take place in early September (exact dates TBD).
Enforce Upward Bound Program rules and regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Be punctual, positive, motivated, interactive, and flexible.
Be able to maintain a positive mental attitude throughout the program and present a positive image of Mills College @ Northeastern University Upward Bound to participants and guests.
Provide tutorial and academic assistance to Upward Bound Program students
Develop appropriate relationships with students.
Work with students to complete assignments, prepare for tests and improve academic skills.
Assess students' academic strengths and weaknesses, and help students set goals for improvement.
Monitor student grades and progress.
Assist in the set-up and breakdown of tutoring classrooms.
Support a program-wide culture of high expectations that includes college preparation and readiness for all students.
Participate in Upward Bound Program Tutor staff meetings.
Maintain accurate records (daily tutoring logs, student attendance, student's needs or difficulties).
Develop and maintain consistent communication with the Associate Director regarding the progress of students tutored.
Ability to understand, abide by, and enforce all Upward Bound Program policies.
Perform other related duties as needed.
SALARY:
This is a temporary part-time position that pays $30 per hour. The schedule is Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm -5:30 pm.
