The Board of Trustees of the Taft City School District are seeking a superintendent with strong school district and community leadership skills who is committed to academic excellence for all students. The superintendent shall serve as the educational leader and chief administrator for the district. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with exceptional communications skills who, along with the Board, will collaboratively lead the District to an academically exceptional and fiscally stable future.
Located in Kern County, the District covers 116 square miles and serves the City of Taft and portions of unincorporated Kern County. With a population of a little over 7,000, Taft is situated in a major petroleum and natural gas production region in California, helping to produce 10% of all U.S. oil production. Close to many gorgeous state and national parks including Carrizo Plain National Monument, Fort Tejon, Los Padres and Sequoia National Forests, or the Trail of 100 Giants, locals and visitors to the area enjoy wide open spaces, and access to numerous outdoor activities.
An historic city, Taft has evolved to support a diverse local economy and houses a municipal airport, museum, and community college while maintaining that important small town feel with multiple active service clubs and a huge 10-day Oildorado Celebration every 5 years that brings visitors from all over the country. Although when you are in Taft you feel far away from suburbia, the town of Bakersfield, Ca. population 380,000, is only 35 miles away, with Los Angeles, Ca. located 130 miles to the south.
Taft City School District is a TK-8 elementary district that consists of four elementary schools (grades TK-3), one (grades 4-5) elementary school, and one junior high school (grades 6-8). The enrollment is approximately 2,400, staffed with 130 certificated, 204 classified, and 36 management employees. The district has an unduplicated count of 91.06% this year, and all students participate in the CEP status program for meals at no cost. Impactful services include ASES programs in place at five sites, one-to-one technology in place for students using Chromebooks, and a Migrant program with approximately 390 students.
This location and position is a unique opportunity for the right candidate to see and feel the impact an educational leader can make in a school district and community every day.
